We have decided to celebrate the new year with a new release. It has been prepared by an artist already familiar to Export Label fans. After the singles ‘Natural Thing’ and ‘Whale’, it’s time for Cuefx to present a full-length album. ‘International Post-War Chill’ is both musically and thematically rich; each of the eleven compositions tells a separate story, and touches upon different branches and varieties of jazz. This has been possible thanks to the cooperation of Dominik Strycharski (flutes, vocals, lyrics), Aleksander Papierz (saxophones), Tomasz Barzęc (trumpet, voice) and Jacek Latoń (Cuefx), who supervised the project, and took great care to weave the sounds together for us to fully experience ‘International Post-War Chill’. The album also features guest appearances by prof. Tadeusz Sławek (lecture), dj Jazzbin (scratching) and Elwira Skrobska (voice).
‘International Post-War Chill’ has been released in the limited edition of 220 CDs, available at ExportShop.

Review - Blossom 'Blue Balloons'

Export Label's last premiere of the year 2011, might be one of the more interesting album's of last year. Meet Blossom's 'Blue Balloons'.
We've already told you about him once when mentioning Cuefx's single 'Whale' - Blossom was then one of the people who remixed the original on a little remix-compilation. If you've missed it, don't worry, luckily the track has been added as a bonus track to Blossom's debut. A debut on which he worked for two years, it seems!

It's difficult to say if Blossom, when recording the instruments for his album did everything by himself and then mixed them together with the appropriate software, or did he look for ready sound samples and just put them together.
Either way, the end result is really 'worthy'. In 'Blue Balloons' you'll find mostly the sound of drums mixed with keys, strings, tiny bells and reeds. Also guitars feature prominently at times, being the main or most important part of music in tracks like 'Double K.', '169' and 'Road of Wind'.

So, as you can see, there's plenty of instruments, and the idea to connect them all in one is a very good and well executed one.
People who like nu-jazz and downtempo should be satisfied as will fans of good melodies, and even the ones who's will hear it accidently, even for them it should be a nice surprise. One making you want such products more.

Blossom - Blue Balloons

Blossom, who debuted a few months ago with a remix on Cuefx’s single “Whale”, is introducing his first solo album today. “Blue Balloons” is the result of several months of hard work. The final product is filled with many downtempo guitar motifs, distinctive complex rhythms and a complementing rich base line. All these sounds are wrapped in the unique aura that makes Blossom’s debut homogenous and balanced.

Netlabel culture can (and should) function as a perfect breeding ground for alternative formats that challenge our traditional concepts of what an album is supposed to be. Here then, is ‘Whale’ by Cuefx, a release which is up to the task. You download a package with a square cover, exactly what CD covers look like, but the pasted letters in the artwork provide a glimpse of its true identity. ‘Whale’ is a Do-It-Yourself remix kit. It features a song lazily swimming from downtempo to abstract hip-hop, the instrumental and vocal tracks for that song and four remixes by invited guests. To top it off, there’s a bonus track included.

I couldn’t wait to to unpack my kit, and popped this baby on the speakers. I was particularly looking forward to Crookram’s and Printempo’s remixes, as both of those artists were also featured on Export Label’s stellar ‘Break Assymetry’ compilation we reviewed a few months ago. Sample wizard Crookram described his own music as “cinematic, sample-based, downtempo soul music” in a recent interview for the Dutch 3VOOR12, and those are exactly the qualities he instilled in his reinterpretation of the original song. Printempo’s remix upgrades Whale’s drum track considerably, and the resulting groove is a real treat. Both Deam’s extremely laidback downtempo and Blossom’s version are excellent. Whoever decided what artists to invite made exactly the right calls.

Ears - Sea Legs

Versatile, instrumental, ambient, complete and ambitious. These adjectives best describe the new material by Ears (Daniel O’Toole). The release of this first solo project of the Australian was preceded by his guest appearances on compilations of the series Free the Beats and Break Asymmetry. This way Ears has been preparing us for something more substantial, something introduced by such tracks as ‘Red Rope’ or ‘Bus Trip’. This something is his album Sea Legs that features not only fantastic violin, piano or vibraphone parts, but also a mass of electronic and ambiguous sounds, that fantastically go together with the light equivocal rhythm section.
‘Sea Legs’ is certainly the culmination of Ears’s musical influences. It is also the proof that abstract and ambitious hip-hop is still a source of inspiration and a genre that has not yet come a full circle.

Barely a few days after our last premiere, we are proud to present a new portion of ambient sounds. This new musical story by Cuefx is a free single enriched with additional renditions by invited guests. The list of remixes is opened by the soothing interpretation by Crookram, with its characteristic recurring vocalise. The slowly unwinding variation with its abstract intro belongs to Printempo, while the electronic version of “Whale”, with an original beat, is a work of Deam. The single also introduces a newcomer, Blossom, whose more lively, yet still downtempo composition closes the set. In addition the single features bonus track, instrumental and acapella versions of “Whale”, which altogether form a set that perfectly fits into the summer spirit.

Cuefx - Natural Thing

After Break Asymetry, the „excellent downtempo” compilation (according to nowamuzyka.pl) it is time for nujazz sound. This single track, entitled “Natural Thing”, easily matches any EP or compilation with its multitude of motifs. Elements of jazz have been reverberated to suggest the straightforward nature of the single, and movie dialogues testify to its humanistic message. The person behind all that is Cuefx, a man of many faces, known as a producer, arranger, DJ (resident of Hipnoza jazz club and Fantom club), as well as the leader of Bandfx band, present on two GNs compilations.

Skalpel - Konfusion

This installment of ‘movie clips’ features a Polish duo, Skalpel. The band, comprised of Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudło, debuted in Ninja Tune Records in 2004, and has been one of the icons of nujazz ever since. The characteristic sound of their compositions is based on samples from somewhat forgotten records of Polish jazz of the 60’s and 70’s which, combined with contemporary electronic sounds, create a unique style. Just like Skalpel samples old records, *export team decided to sample an old Polish film. A documentary about a ship launching illustrates “Konfusion”, a track from a record of the same title.

The clip takes place at a set on location, where the atmosphere is organized but tense. The music in the background seems to drown out the emotions of the protagonists, its rhythm dictating the pace of the clip. The viewer feels like a tightrope walker – accelerated drums beat out the rhythm of the music track, and the content of the picture slowly reveals the true protagonist.

Break Asymmetry - the compilation by a wonderful internet-resource Good Netlabels came out back in March, and had already been mentioned by pretty much every more or less important netlabel-related website. Still, this is too big of a release (and, most importantly, too good of a release) to not mention here. If I had to sum it up in just one word, this word would be "tasteful". But I don't have to limit myself, do I? Break Asymmetry is a very tasteful compilation of 17 instrumental tracks of predominantly nu-jazz/downtempo nature. So, here's little warning: if your idea of trip-hop is constricted to "dark slow pop-music with beats and vocals", this compilation may induce some sort of a WTF reaction.

There are some pretty straightforward jazz tracks on it, where only certain elements, - like voice samples on JazzClams - "Morningbirds" or B.R.O. - "Story Of Sad Human", - indicate that subtle "nu" direction of their jazz style. The others present the delicious blend where jazz ingredients are sliced up in big juicy chunks and mixed well with electronica and then spread up on top of classy downtempo beats. Check out the absolutely delightful "Thread" by Quantifier or Thallus - "A4" for examples. Surprisingly, all of the tracks on the compilation are pretty short (most of them are under 5 minutes), which is great for a sampler - you get a great looking plate of appetizers, which represent the chefs well, but leave you hungry for the main dish. If not a bit too hungry. Maybe i was looking for a bit more experimentation, unpredictability, like the insane percussion on Maed - "Yfelful" or suddenly creepy rap on Niteffect's dark and strange "No Doubt". But I'm nitpicking. I'm getting pretty close to accusing a good compilation of being too good, so I better stop and direct you toward the free download page.

Good Netlabels is proud to present another volume of GNs Compilation: Break Asymmetry. This release celebrates the fourth anniversary of the launch of Good Netlabels, a site dedicated to music produced and published independently or via netlabels, available online for free. From the very beginning, Good Netlabels has been devoted to reviewing and promoting the most interesting releases within the realm of contemporary electronic jazz, abstract instrumental hip-hop, experimental downtempo, chillout or trip-hop. The third premiere of ‘movie clips’ once again features a German band. This time we would like to present representatives of experimental music, Kammerflimmer Kollektief. In the over ten years of their existence, they have released seven albums on which they keep searching for new sounds, by the same token expanding their musical horizons and the boundaries of the genre. Numerous concerts, not just in Germany, made Kammerflimmer Kollektief one of the most interesting and ambitious bands of the experimental scene. One of the faces of the German collective is presented in ‘Mantra’, a track from the album entitled “Cicadidae”, interpreted by *export in this clip.

The sounds with their underwater echoes fill out an empty pool. Music, like a drop of water, bobs on the surface of the presented world, creating a ripple effect. The torrent of sounds and the nostalgic music in the background sketch out the intentions of the protagonist of the clip. It is a mixture of scheming, indifference, tension and terror. How will his story end?

Danny Bow - Frozen Memories

It is our pleasure to introduce export label new representative – Danny Bow. A character known previously as Enbe, present on the music scene for few years now. His last album which was warmly welcomed, the “Theory of Jazz” released in 2007 by 16wersów label, still has a group of loyal and regular listeners. After longer absence the artist returns with altered profile. Hiding behind new nickname he takes up music themes which until now weren’t present in his quests. He expresses that in seventeen premiere tracks comprising “Frozen Memories” album.

The sounds of „Frozen Memories” create strong, continuous lines out of shraged single point. Sometimes by being abruptly broken off they push the listener into the feeling of insatiability, but after a while they compensate it with thick, intense tone. The other tracks from this album emphasize the rush of the world in all its forms, or build its complex structure. By the dialogues interspersed throughout the melodies, Danny Bow expresses his opinion on music and topics that concerns it.

Far From Moscow is a resource designed to promote, catalog, and consider new music from Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus, together with the Baltic nations (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia). In early September appeared an article ‘New Downtempo and Trip-Hop Releases: The Architecture of Happiness’ about new releases from around Russia and also about our first ep in catalog - My hand make circle in the sunset air. Invite you to read it.

Several new downtempo releases from around Russia have proven themselves worthy of attention, both individually and collectively. Together they form an interesting statement on the meaning of that slow style within a Russian context, i.e., what it means to produce unhurried dance music, tinged with elements of dub and semi-audible vocal sample. […]

Slower still is a new recording from Ekaterinburg's Nienvox (aka Aleksandr Efimov), who has been writing and performing music since 2004 in his hometown of Ekaterinburg. Another site, however, documents his career as built over the last two years alone; the period from '04 to '08 must have been spent in barely discernible activity.
With five mini-albums and EPs to his name, published internationally, he now offers a four-track effort with the equally quirky title of "My Hand Makes Circle In The Sunset Air." If Fomenko associates a downtempo aesthetic with increasing retrospection, especially in autumn, Efimov's output reduces the tempo further - and amplifies the wistfulness.
Yet again the angular, unappealing shapes of Soviet architecture are sidelined in favor of a loftier purview. Fomenko's photo was taken after the physical effort of climbing to a high location; Efimov's artwork pushes those same structures to one side in order to prejudice a domain of pastel shades - and a pleasing blur. The nasty insistence of "dirty," daily experience makes a lack of focus very appealing.

Efimov adds a little text in order to clarify this outlook: "...Among some cold, even severe tones, the sweet melody of home and family can be heard. It is 'cooled' somewhat by a note of alienation and the overall mystery of an urban soundscape. The EP's chillout rhythms soothe the soul and allow the listener to escape the bustle of everyday life." Deceleration and lyricism work to mutual benefit, escaping together the pressures of the daily grind, best epitomized by low-grade urban housing.

Dictaphone - M. =Addiction

It’s about time to set off a new video section on our site - a place where you’ll be able not only to watch video clips from export’s records releases, but also to see visual interpretations of the work of recognized musicians’. The first those band is Dictaphone. This German duo of Oliver Doerell and Roger Döring debuted at the beginning of 20th century with their album M.= Addiction released by City Centre Offices. All of the compositions share a unique calm, tranquility and melancholy, which combine to create a perfect mixture of ambient and electronic music with subtle jazz manner accompanied by the sound of clarinet and saxophone. We have started the video reconstruction of Dictaphone music by choosing the opening song from the M.= Addiction album.

The video clip has been based on a fusion of short clips taken from Wojciech Solorz’s movie ‘Molo’. The picture interprets music and suffuses it with eeriness. Heavy sea waves laboriously approach with tons of bouncing echo sounds, reflecting spiritual condition of the man waking up on the beach. Dynamic melody from the beginning describes behaviours and circumstances in which the character finds himself, to hush and give way to single sounds, with which it comments the whole situation at the end.

Nienvox - My Hand Makes Circle In The Sunset Air

Nienvox is a boy from Ekaterniburg (Russia), who has been present on the independent scene since the end of 2008. In this short period of time he managed to make his mark through his five minialbums released by Bump Foot, Pop Errors Gallery and Dusted Wax Kingdom netlabels. Nienvox has also been cooperating with 813 and publishing his tracks on a number of compilation albums, including “Inaspin” on the recent album Jazzy Puzzle. All of the above make this hardworking artist one of the most exciting representatives of the independent scene. After a six-month hiatus he is coming back with a new EP, thereby marking the launch of *export netlabel.

“My hand makes circles in the sunset air” takes the listener into the world of projects, where amongst the cold and severe tones a sweet melody of home and family can be heard cooled by a note of alienation and mystery of urban sounds. Chillout rhythms soothe the soul and allow the listener to escape the haste of everyday life.
